Week 7 – Project Proposal

Please find below the proposal for my Digital Humanities project.

I have decided to base my project on the literary and adapted works of J.R.R Tolkien. My objective is to study: The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and their movie counterparts. My goal is to create connections between both literary works, as well as their movie counterparts, and show how they relate to our own culture.

I chose this specific topic as not only is it near and dear to my heart, but it is a very interesting topic in the terms of our own culture. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” was published in 1937, 85 years ago, and yet we have seen massive budget films and now TV shows continue from that world to this day. It is my belief that there is something deeply connecting our own lives with that of the characters in his works; Something that every one of us can relate to. I intend to explore these connections, show them, and show why they matter as well as how they relate to our culture as it has changed and evolved over time.

Our own culture has changed drastically over the past 85 years, yet these works are still very relevant in our day, and I believe that is worth some investigation.

Below I will detail the technologies and methods which I will employ to create this project.

Firstly, I will be using video/audio capturing software called OBS. This software will be required to record my own voice as well as visuals that I will create and use in the project.

Secondly, I will be using Sony Vegas, which is a video editing software that I am familiar with. This will be required as I intend to add audio and visual additives after having recorded the project to make it more entertaining and informative. I will also need this technology to cut and edit out any spots that I decide to rework, or where I make a mistake.

Thirdly, I will use the website/tool Voyant to create and represent the literary works of Tolkien and give a visual aid on the subject in which I will be speaking. This tool will be critical in comparing the literary works side-by-side.

Finally, I will create a timeline that connects the creation of these works to our time, and how that may relate to their success as well as our culture.
